In this highlight reel, Judy and Dave Flattery share their journey from being ‘essentially oblivious’ to the world of incarceration to being keenly interested in and committed to supporting the evolving transformation of prisons as centers of rehabilitation, for the benefit of all of us. Judy shares how they became aware and interested. Dave shares incarceration rates of the U.S., overall and by state, as compared to other countries. He highlights the racial divide in incarceration rates in the U.S. and elsewhere, and shares the positive impact of in-prison programming on rates of recidivism. Together they relate some of their personal experiences, having connected with hundreds of incarcerated people, while volunteering in programs at 12 of California's 33 state prisons since June 2023—a life changing year for them.
