From Punishment to Possibility: Reimagining First Chances

Synopsis: Incarceration often reflects systemic failures — poverty, racism, and exclusion — that deny people a real first chance. Yet when we center dignity, healing, and opportunity, transformation is possible. My journey and Defy Ventures’ in-prison programs highlight how reimagining prisons as places where possibility begins and communities grow stronger creates lasting change.

Our Speaker: Israel Garcia knows firsthand the power of opportunity. After being incarcerated at age 15 and serving 25 years, he returned home in 2020 and dedicated himself to education, healing, and leadership. Today, as Executive Director of Defy Ventures Northern California, Israel leads programs inside prisons and in the community that create real first chances — spaces where people can heal, grow, and build meaningful futures. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Sociology from San Francisco State University, graduating Cum Laude, and is currently pursuing his Master of Social Work at the University of Denver.
